Who is this course for?

Our dedicated Haul rescue at height course is specifically designed for delegates who are required to work at height whether they are operatives, managing operatives or supervisors.

Outcome

Delegates who attend this course will be able to competently and safely handle the rescue of a conscious casualty, and be able to facilitate the raising and recovery of an unconscious casualty.

What are the objectives of the course

This height safety rescue course is designed to be easy to understand and learn while being memorable. The course trains delegates how to use the Haul rescue system which is simple and fast to operate

This course has a friendly format focusing on the recovery of a conscious or unconscious casualty by fellow operatives onsite in under 10 minutes.

The course focuses on using the haul (unconscious casualty raising system) but also covers the ladder and rescue step conscious causality systems to offer a complete rescue package.

Is the haul system right for you?

The Haul rescue at height system allows the safe recovery of a fallen unconscious causality through raising the casualty back up to the floor from where the operative had fallen, which is an advantage on applications where lower floors are obstructed, glazed off or high-rise making lowering impractical.

The haul requires a minimum of four people to operate in effecting a rescue using the system.

We train at your location helping you simulate real on-site rescue

On-site training is the key to reducing disruption and minimising lost time for employers. It also allows Leading Edge to apply specific training and advice relative to rescue should it be required at your actual site.

Every second counts after a fall when a worker is suspended and fellow operatives on the scene need to react quickly.

In intense, stressful and life threatening situations many individuals will suffer an onset of panic after the initial adrenaline rush.

A panicked state damages the thought processes and the affected person will be unable to make logical or
considered decisions.

This puts both the casualty and the rescuer at risk as the panic can interfere with the
rescue operation.

In fact, the number of people who are killed or injured as a result of trying to help a colleague or friend who has fallen from height almost exceeds the number of original casualties.

This is why adequate operative training is essential not only for those who have fallen from height but also for the operatives attempting the rescue.

Haul rescue course content

Our specially developed training course will give candidates the real skills and confidence to carry out a rescue operation in a safe and efficient way.

These skills will have a dramatic impact on the prevention of death and injury for all concerned.

Trained personnel will be able to handle the rescue of both conscious and unconscious casualties quickly to minimise suspension trauma issues.

They will also be able to carry out the rescue with the appropriate hazard awareness for both themselves and the casualty necessary for a fast and safe rescue operation.

This rescue training course focuses on the specific requirements of handling the rescue operations of
fallen casualties.

The course begins in a classroom setting with the basics of rescue safety awareness and preparation including equipment selection, recovery techniques and detailed information around the subject.

The course details the signs, symptoms and effects of Suspension Trauma and the importance of an efficient and safe rescue operation of a casualty
suffering panic.

Candidates will also learn the importance of aftercare and basic first aid for the situation so that the casualty receives the best possible care whilst waiting for emergency services to
arrive on scene.

The practical element of this course will simulate a rescue operation on-site for candidates to participate in:
Candidates will be shown various systems of rescue for both conscious and unconscious casualties and will then be given the opportunity to practice using these systems in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of the instructor.

Rescue techniques are reinforced with memorable chants outlining the procedures so that candidates can easily carry out the rescue operation from memory in any given stressful situation taking into account all
safety considerations.

Our Height Safety Rescue training course has been designed with our extensive knowledge and experience of construction sites in mind. We understand the operative capabilities, the scope of works involved in a project package and the constraints on access and restrictions and we have developed our training course accordingly.

Course programme - Theory (1 hour)

Course Introduction

• Outlining the theoretical and practical training
• Risk assessment safety briefing
• Medical assessment documentation
• Rescue awareness

Group Exercise

Designed to establish confidence levels with workshop activities

Suspension Trauma

• Toxic shock, re-flow syndrome and orthostatic intolerance introduction
• What Toxic Shock is and how to recognise the symptoms
• How to handle and minimise the effects
• Casualty treatment, aftercare guidelines and information

Saving Lives

In-depth training on rescue equipment and planning for successful rescue operations to include:

• Trade and application equipment suitability and use
• Raising the alarm and emergency procedures
• Rescue team responsibilities, procedures and information
• Self-recovery systems for conscious casualties
• Recovery systems training and appropriate uses for unconscious casualties
• Personal relief systems introduction and training

Haul Unconscious System

The group will be shown the unconscious casualty using the haul

Multiple Rescue Operators System:

• Horizontal anchorage suitability (Back from the edge)
• Raising and parking capability (very fast recovery)
• Requires five people to operate and effect rescue
• Small and lightweight, very simple and quick to use (weighs only the same a scaffold lanyard)

Inspection and Care of Rescue Kit

How to care for and maintain your rescue kit with an inspection regime and planning

Proactive site awareness

Hazard awareness to spot potential risks and dangers onsite before they happen

Practical (3 hours)

Group Onsite Practical Excise

• Informal risk assessment
• General safety briefing to ensure a safe rescue practical

Live Area

Establish a safe working area and necessary safety precautions are in place

Safety Systems Set-up

• Correct set-up of haul and Ladder safety equipment
• Safety provision to cover limited open edge exposure and strict supervision in a controlled site environment

Participation Live Exercise

A group practical exercise where operatives will engage in live rescue, we offer the option of using a rescue dummy or live rescue of each for real simulation.

This is designed to establish competency, confidence and determine operatives level of equipment familiarisation and to strengthen any areas of weakness.

Operatives receive focused training in how to set up the equipment, anchorage selection and suitability, appropriate equipment deployment and operation for rescue given specific
site operations.

This section of the course will include the following exercises:

• Conscious casualty self recovery system (Rescue Ladder)
• Effective setup, deploying and ladder climbing techniques
• Personal relief systems (Rescue Step)
• Donning, deploying and relief techniques
• Unconscious casualty recovery using the haul recovery equipment:
• Horizontal anchorage scenario (Back from the leading edge i.e. rigging from columns one row back on the grid etc):
• Setup and effect recover of casualty through:
• Raising capability
• Parking
• Casualty safe recover handling technique (Bringing casualty over the slab edge safely)

Live Instructor Guidance

A tour around the site for the instructor to review potential and existing site issues, candidate feedback on potential hazards and all relevant areas of concern with regard to
rescue operations.

Review Of Attained Competence

The course ends after a practical and oral test

We train on your site, in real working conditions, solving real on the job problems.

Our major strength lies in the direct association we enjoy with our customer's construction sites. Because we offer our training courses on-site we can see firsthand the equipment, conditions and situations the operatives are placed into and can provide real safety advice
and solutions.

Training on-site also reduced disruption for workers and minimises lost time for employers. Candidates will not have to travel out of their way to a training office and instead will be able to work at their usual site with their job specific equipment to hand so that we can directly address any safety concerns and issues candidates or managers may have. This eliminates equipment selection, use and suitability issues at
the workplace.

Upon successful completion of the Leading Edge Haul Height Rescue training course, we guarantee trained personnel will be able to competently and safely handle the rescue of a conscious casualty and be able to facilitate the raising and recovery of an
unconscious casualty.

Effect safe rescue within the time frame before serious injuries are sustained as a result of Suspension Trauma, to ensure operatives can easily undertake a successful rescue operation while minimising trauma damage.

Candidates will also have an acute awareness of the dangers and risks involved in a casualty rescue for both the casualty and themselves. Candidates will also be able to administer after rescue care and aid to the casualty while waiting for emergency services.

On successful completion of the course and examination, candidates will be issued with a Leading Edge Photo ID card and certification as proof of their accomplishment, safety awareness and level of competence.

Our training is job specific and so in order to provide the most effective training we deliver courses on-site. So wherever you are, we can deliver the training courses you need.

Duration - ½ Day (8.30am to 1pm)

Our courses last a full half a day to ensure candidates receive excellent training and practical assessments. Because our training is held on-site it will minimise disruption and travelling times so you can maintain your workplace schedule.
