Who is this course for?

This one day fall arrest rescue course is for those who are going to be assigned the responsibility of rescuing co-workers, those responsible for managing and supervising rescue operations and anyone whose responsibility it is to know about, understand and implement planning for rescue.

Outcome

Delegates who complete this one day course will have a 360 degree understanding of the types of rescue and available systems.

The course will help delegates identify which system is most appropriate, what is required and how to rescue conscious and unconscious casualties within a time frame to avoid injuries caused by suspension trauma.

What are the objectives of the course

This rescue course will give delegates a complete understanding and the ability to effect a rescue using any of the available Leading Edge systems including:

• Haul System - casualty raising
• Descent System - casualty lowering
• Winch System - raising and lowering
• Low height System - casualty lowering

Having gained the ability to use these systems and recognise which system is most suitable for the given task,conditions and work environment. Delegates will be able to select and implement the most appropriate system for their current requiremens.

Is this combined rescue course right for you?

This course gives delegates a comprehensive understanding and ability to implement and use all of the available Leading Edge rescue systems.

Delegates will be taught which is the most appropriate system to use given the work being done and taking into consideration the working conditions and environment.

In selecting the most appropriate system delegates will consider, conscious and unconscious causalities, obstacles to recovery such as floor obstructions, glazed off or high rise, making lowering impractical and any other issues which may affect the viability of carrying out a timely rescue.

We train at your location helping you simulate real on-site rescue

On-site training is the key to reducing disruption and minimising lost time for employers. It also allows Leading Edge to apply specific training and advice relative to rescue should it be required at your actual site.

Every second counts after a fall when a worker is suspended and fellow operatives on the scene need to react quickly.

In intense, stressful and life threatening situations many individuals will suffer an onset of panic after the initial adrenaline rush.

A panicked state damages the thought processes and the affected person will be unable to make logical or considered decisions.

This puts both the casualty and the rescuer at risk as the panic can interfere with the rescue operation.

In fact, the number of people who are killed or injured as a result of trying to help a colleague or friend who has fallen from height almost exceeds the number of original casualties.

This combined fall arrest rescue group of courses and covers:

• Casualty raising - Haul System
• Casualty lowering - Descent System
• Raising and Lowering - Winch System
• Low height rescue - Low Height System

The Haul is fast and easy to use, simple to operate and very effective where there are an adequate number of operatives who can assist with the hauling action (this requires 5 people).

Both conscious and unconscious casualtites can be recoverd and rescue does not require operatives to be exposed to the fall area.

The winch system allows the safe recovery of a fallen unconscious/conscious person through raising or lowering of the casualty, this provides multiple options based on where the fall occurred and the available access and onsite restrictions.

Raising allows the recovery of the causality back up to the floor where working, which is an advantage on applications where lower floors are obstructed, glazed off or high-rise making lowering impractical.

The lowering facility is the mechanically easiest method in just descending the casualty to a lower floor or ground where medics can stabilise and extract quickly without having to carry down though the structure and all associated hazards and obstacles this presents.

The winch only requires one person to operate in any mode to effect rescue using the system.

We’ve developed this course around the descent rescue system. With the main focus being on the equipment and the clients specific requirements. The whole ethos was to bring together a great system and combine it with what we believe is essential in a hybrid rescue course, only focusing on what you really need to know.

We recognised the customer need for a simple solution offering basic rescue from height that involves lowering the casualty to the ground.

The descent rescue course is open to any person that has exposure to working where its possible to be at risk of falling or working with co-workers equally at risk, therefore has a responsibility to be able to effect rescue quickly and safely as part of being at height.

The descent rescue system has many applications across most industries and scope of works. Examples includes but not limited to scaffolding, façades/ frames, plant, roofs etc.

The descent rescue system is designed to lower the casualty, which is the physically the easiest way to go, and fastest type of rescue. Because of this the whole rescue operation can be handled by one person, and there is no need for the rescue operator to go near the fall area exposure, reducing further risk of anybody else falling.

Lowering the casualty to the ground makes extraction from the building better for the emergency services.

We have recognised the need for a simple course offering basic rescue from low height that involves lowering the casualty ground.

Facilitating lowering is the simplest and quickest method of rescue and provides a solution if the fallen worker is unable to recovery themselves.

The low height rescue system has many applications across most packages and scope of works. Examples includes but not limited to scaffolding, façades, frames, plant etc. As most work at height actually takes place at low height, typically at or below four meters off the floor.

This course gives you choices

Delegates who have completed this course will be able to evaluate which is the best rescue solution given the constraints and working conditions of the work being done. They will be able to make correct decisions from both a compliance with health and safey legislation and with regard to work being done and commetcial implications.

This course fully equips those who have a responsibility to manage and supervise the provision of rescue and those who need to carry out rescue

Course content

Our specially developed training course will give candidates the real skills, knowledge and confidence to carry out a rescue operation in a safe and efficient way.

These skills will have a dramatic impact on the prevention of death and injury for all concerned.

Trained personnel will be able to handle the rescue of both conscious and unconscious casualties quickly to minimise suspension trauma issues.

They will also be able to carry out the rescue with the appropriate hazard awareness for both themselves and the casualty necessary for a fast and safe rescue operation.

As this is a comined course covering the four rescue systems the course has been specially designed not to duplicate content, but to deliver fresh, vibrant content in a way that is easy to remember.

Each course has both a classroom (theory) and a practical element.

Our course follows a specially developed logical process, giving weight only to the things that are directly relevant and specific to the actual working environment and scope of activity, available access and equipment suitability.

Delegates will be able to handle the rescue of both conscious and unconscious casualties within a very short time frame and demonstrate appropriate hazard awareness for both themselves and the casualty necessary for a fast and safe rescue operation.

Phase 1 of the course begins in the classroom, covering the theoretical issues around the subject as a whole, from basic legal outline and duties, through to equipment selection, recovery techniques and information on the signs, symptoms and effects of Suspension Trauma.

Delegates will also learn the importance of after-care for the situation, so that the casualty receives the correct care whilst waiting for emergency services to arrive on scene.

The strength of the course lies in the practical element. We actually simulate rescue operations where operatives will be working so the training is directly relevant to the working environment, making it specific, focused and effective.

Delegates are given the opportunity carry out live practice using the different rescue methods in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of the instructor.

Delegates will be engaged using both conscious and unconscious casualties systems, selecting the appropriate method based on rescue requirements and working as very small group, as an individual, or as part of a bigger team, and will then be given the opportunity carry out live practice using these different systems in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of the instructor.

We incorporate rescue techniques that reinforced skills, preventing skill fade and confusion caused by anxiety given the potentially stressful situation.

Delegates may use a rescue dummy if preferred

We understand how important safety is in any work place environment and the difference professional and effective training makes to a rescue operation. This is why we highlight personal safety at all time throughout the training course and keep site disruption to a minimum whilst candidates are taking the course.

When it really matters, you need to be competent and confident to carry out rescue and you can only really achieve this through live direct training.

We specialise in rescue training that has been developed directly for those working at height. We have real on-site trainers working every day of the week training in safety and rescue at height.

This course is very hands on, we don’t just talk, we do. What does that mean? We actually rescue people on the course, by physically going through the process, at height, recovering people.

The delegates all have to complete real rescues of each other (we also provide a rescue dummy if preferred). This is done in a very safe controlled environment with all the necessary back-up systems for maximum safety.

In-depth training on rescue equipment and planning for successful rescue operations to include:

• Trade and application equipment suitability and use
• Raising the alarm and emergency procedures
• Rescue team responsibilities, procedures and information
• Self-recovery systems for conscious casualties
• Recovery systems training and appropriate uses for unconscious casualties
• Personal relief systems introduction and training

Unconscious Rescue Systems

The group will be shown the four unconscious casualty systems using the Haul, Winch, Descent and Low height systems

Inspection and Care of Rescue Kit

How to care for and maintain your rescue kit with an inspection regime and planning

Proactive site awareness

Hazard awareness to spot potential risks and dangers onsite before they happen

Safety systems set-up

• Correct set-up of safety equipment for working at height and rescue
• Safety provision to cover limited open edge exposure and strict supervision in a controlled environment

Participation live exercise (we also provide a rescue dummy if preferred)

A group practical exercise whereby workers engage in the live rescue of each other.

Designed to establish competency, confidence and determine equipment familiarisation and to strengthen any delegates areas of weakness.

Delegates also receive in depth training how to set up the Winch, Haul, Descent, and Low Height systems. Anchorage selection and suitability, deployment and operation for specific rescue operations.

This section of the course will include the following exercises:

• The Ladder - conscious casualty self recovery system
• Effective setup, deploying and ladder climbing techniques



• The Rescue Step
• Donning, deploying and relief techniques



• Unconscious casualty recovery using the Haul recovery equipment:
• Horizontal anchorage scenario (Back from the leading edge i.e. rigging from columns one row back on the grid etc):
• Setup and effect recover of casualty through:

• Casualty safe recover handling technique



• The winch rescue - casualty raising and lowering system

Live instructor guidance

A tour around the work place for the instructor to review potential and existing site issues, candidate feedback on potential hazards and all relevant areas of concern with regard to rescue operations.

Our major strength lies in the direct association we enjoy with our customer's sites. Because we offer our training courses on-site we can see firsthand the equipment, conditions and situations the operatives are placed into and can provide real safety advice and solutions.

Training on-site also reduced disruption for workers and minimises lost time for employers. Candidates will not have to travel out of their way to a training office and instead will be able to work at their usual site with their job specific equipment to hand so that we can directly address any safety concerns and issues candidates or managers may have. This eliminates equipment selection, use and suitability issues at the workplace.

Upon successful completion of the course, we guarantee trained personnel will be able to competently and safely handle the rescue of a conscious casualty, and facilitate the lowering/raising and recovery operation of a unconscious casualty.

• Candidates will also have an acute awareness of the dangers and risks involved in a casualty rescue for both the casualty and themselves.
• Competently use the Rescue Step (Personal relief system), the Ladder (Self recovery system) the Haul (casualty raising), Descent (Casualty lowering system), and the Winch (casualty raising and lowering system) effectively and confidently in a pressured situation.

On successful completion of the course and examination, candidates will be issued with a Leading Edge Photo ID card and certification as proof of their accomplishment, safety awareness and level of competence.

Our training is job specific and so in order to provide the most effective training we deliver courses on-site. So wherever you are, we can deliver the training courses you need.

Duration - 1 Day (8.30am to 5.00pm)

Our courses last a full day to ensure candidates receive excellent training and practical assessments. Because our training is held on-site it will minimise disruption and travelling times so you can maintain your workplace schedule.

This bolt-on to the combined course is a training session on using a stretcher in height safety rescue. This part of the course covers the vertical and horizontal handling of a stretcher and casualty, training covers both raising and lowering depending on which is required.

Important! This does not cover casualty handling i.e. manipulation of a casualty onto the stretcher. Handling a casualty with possible spinal injuries etc. would be covered in a specific first aid course.
