Who is this course for?

This course is open to any person that has a basic understanding of working at height, and as such has exposure to working at low height, where its possible to be at risk of falling or working with co-workers equally at risk, therefore has a duty to be able to effect rescue quickly and safely as part of being at low height.

Is the 'Low Height' rescue system right for you?

The low height rescue system allows the safe recovery of a fallen unconscious/ conscious person through the lowering of the casualty over a short distance (less than 4 metres).

Lowering is the easiest method and quickest solution from low height, this may include lowering to the floor beneath the fallen casualty or descending to the ground from plant and machinery, or any environment where the distance to the ground is limited to a maximum of four metres.

However this is only suitable for application where lowering is a viable option and there is no obstruction/ restrictions to this process. For more information about how the system works please see the other tabs on this page.

What are the objectives of the course

When it really matters, you need to be competent and confident to carry out rescue and you can only really achieve this through live direct training.

This course is very hands on, we don't just talk, we do. What does that mean? We actually rescue people on the course, by physically going through the process, at height recovering people. The delegates all have to complete real rescues of each other (we also provide a rescue dummy on each course if preferred).

This course is done in a very safe controlled environment with all the necessary back-up systems for maximum safety.

Learning outcome

After successful completion of the course, we guarantee delegates will be able to competently and safely handle the rescue of a conscious casualty using the rescue step (personal relief system) and the rescue ladder system, but with the main focus being able to facilitate the recovery of an unconscious casualty by lowering to a lower floor or ground level using the descent rescue system.

Low Height Rescue Introduction

We have recognised the need for a simple course offering basic rescue from low height that involves lowering the casualty ground.

Facilitating lowering is the simplest and quickest method of rescue and provides a solution if the fallen worker is unable to recovery themselves, combining this with the ladder and rescue step offers a package which meets the needs and duties of employers to provide conscious (able) self recovery and conscious (incapacitated)/ unconscious rescue prevision from low height.

Who is this course for?

Is the low height system right for you?

The low height rescue system has many applications across most packages and scope of works. Examples includes but not limited to scaffolding, façades, frames, plant etc. As most work at height actually takes place at low height, typically at or below four metres off the floor.

The low height rescue system allows the safe recovery of a fallen person through the lowering of the casualty, this is the simplest and fastest solution, this may include lowering to the floor beneath the fallen casualty or descending to the ground, making extraction from height better for the emergency services.

The low height system is simple to use and fast to set up and operate only requires one person to effect a rescue at or below 4 metres.

IMPORTANT The descent system is only suitable for applications where lowering is a viable option and there is no obstruction/ restrictions to this process. If this is the case we would advise using our Haul (Raising only system) or the Winch (Raising and lowering system).

How it works

The low height rescue system is very simple to use and fast to set up and operate only requires one person to effect a rescue.

The system can either be physically attached to the causality i.e. if fallen on scaffolding etc, its easy to actually connect direct onto the harness, its just then a case of releasing the casualty own system either buy cutting or transferring the load across the systems and disconnecting the causality lanyard etc.

If your not able to reach the fallen causality, you fit the rescue grab onto the casualty's line at the point closest to you, and then again its just a case of releasing the casualty's own system either buy cutting or transferring the load across the systems and disconnecting the causality's lanyards etc. Followed then by simply lowering via allowing the low height systems rope to slip through the belay device, which descends the casualty to the ground effortlessly and only takes a few seconds.

The reason we limited the low height kit to 4 metres, is that should the rescue operator completely let go once the system is load carrying the causality, this would result in the causality lowering too fast, with only the friction of rope passing through the belay device slowing the decent. The limited height would mean no serous injuries but the casualty would be bruised and hurt.

This may initially sound alarming however consider the following. Only training and competent persons can use the equipment. This type of belay equipment is current use worldwide throughout industries and private sectors by tens of thousands of people. If you drove your car and let go of the steering wheel you would also expect it hit something, however it would be unthinkable to do this, the same conclusion applies when lowering someone, if you are unable to hold concentration for this time you should not be operating the equipment and probably not working with height exposure.

We do offer a very similar rescue system to the low Height kit, but with automatic safety stop function, if the operator lets go! it stops and hold the load, this system is called descent rescue system. As you would expect this is more costly and we use this system for rescue applications above 4 meters, as it comes setup for applications up to 30 metres as standard.

As It is our experience that below 4 metres, we aim to keep things very simple and basic, as its all that's needed at this height. Especially when you factor in operational usage, height exposure, level of competence, commercial cost relative to exposure and application necessity. However if reading this you feel more comfortable we would advise using our descent rescue system featured on this website.

Course content

The low height rescue course focuses only on the things that are directly relevant and specific to the actual working environment and scope of activity, available access and equipment suitability.

Theory

Phase 1 of the course begins in the classroom, covering the theoretical issues around the subject as a whole, from basic legal outline and duties, through to equipment selection, recovery techniques and other relevant key information.

Practical

The strength of the course lies in the practical element. We actually simulate rescue operations where operatives are working so the training is directly relevant to their working environment, making it specific, focused and effective.

Delegates are given the opportunity carry out live practice using the different rescue methods in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of the instructor.

We incorporate rescue techniques that reinforced skills, preventing skill fade and confusion caused by anxiety given the potentially stressful situation.

• Unconscious system(s) for casualty recovery
• Personal relief systems

Inspection and Care of Rescue Kit

How to care for and maintain your rescue kit with an inspection regime and planning

Practical (3 hours)

Practical Workplace Setup and Briefing

• Informal risk assessment
• General safety briefing to ensure a safe rescue practical
• Establish a safe working area and necessary safety precautions are in place
• Correct set-up of safety equipment for working at height and rescue
• Safety provision to cover limited open edge exposure and strict supervision in a controlled environment

Group Participation Live Exercise

(we also provide a rescue dummy if preferred)

A group practical exercise whereby workers engage in the live rescue of each other. Designed to establish competency, confidence and determine equipment familiarisation and to strengthen any delegates areas of weakness.

Delegates also receive in depth training how to set up the low height rescue system, anchorage selection and suitability, deployment and operation for specific rescue operations.

Live Instructor Guidance

A tour around the work place for the instructor to review potential and existing site issues, candidate feedback on potential hazards and all relevant areas of concern with regard to rescue operations.

We train on your site

To make training as real and have direct association we carry out training where they physically work, making it job/trade specific so that we can directly address any safety concerns and issues candidates or managers may have specific to their scope of work. This eliminates equipment selection, use, suitability and issues.

Training onsite additionally reduces disruption from traveling minimises lost time for employers.

• Effect safe rescue within the time frame before serious injuries are sustained as a result of suspension trauma.
• Ensure operatives can easily undertake a successful rescue operation while minimising trauma damage.
• Delegates will also have an acute awareness of the dangers and risks involved in a casualty rescue for both the casualty and themselves.
• Delegates will also be able to administer after rescue care to the casualty while waiting for emergency services.
• Competently use the Rescue Step (Personal relief system), the Ladder (Self recovery system) and the Low Height Rescue (Casualty lowering system) effectively and confidently in a pressured situation.
