Safe Use Of Ladders
Safe Use Of Ladders
Ladders can be used as access and egress to a work place and also to work for short duration only, the definition of short duration is a single task that takes no longer than 30 minutes in one position. If the task extends beyond this then other means of access would be more appropriate.
When selecting a ladder or step ladder consideration should be given to the classification.
Ladders classified as BS2037 / bs1129 Class 3 for domestic use and should NEVER be used
in any workplace.
EN131 is for trade and light industrial use.
BS2037/BS1129 Class1 for heavy duty and industrial use.
For the safe use of ladders you should consider the following as a minimum:
- Is the ground/ resting surface suitable?
- Can the ladder / step ladder be positioned correctly?
- Is it possible to position a ladder or step close enough to the task to avoid working sideways and prevent overreaching?
- Is it possible to place a ladder at the correct angle?
- Is it possible to extend and raise the ladder safely?
- Can the ladder be tied in or stabilised?
- What measures are required to protect other people?
- Is the weather going to prevent you from working safely?
- What loads will the task require and will it affect the stability of the ladder?
- Can you maintain a stable position on the ladder?
- Is the user competent to use the ladder?
- Is the correct PPE being used?
