Today, I’m greeting the sun with a fresh sense of purpose. It’s not just another day at work, but a day full of impact, learning and life-saving skills. I’m a work at height safety instructor with Leading Edge Safety, and right now I’m gearing up to lead one of our highly practical height rescue training courses. All our courses are crafted so safety meets hands-on experience, and confidence is built one climb at a time. Our Multi Rescue Course is between 4-6 hours long, with the theory side lasting approximately 1 hour.
Morning: Setting the Tone for Success
I arrive on site early, ready to welcome another eager group of trainees. Today’s theme? Height Rescue Multi Method Rescue Course. It’s a course designed to give participants the knowledge and ability to act swiftly and confidently in the event of a fall from rigging rescue systems, to lower or raise a casualty safely.
First things first: introductions, coffee, and a friendly briefing to help everyone relax and get excited about the day ahead. I share why understanding the science behind falls and suspension intolerance matters, because it can literally be the difference between life and death if a suspended worker isn’t rescued quickly. Learning about things like suspension intolerance and reflow syndrome isn’t dry theory when you realise how important it is for real people on real jobs.
Blending Theory with Real Insight
Once we’ve covered the basics and had a few laughs breaking the ice, we dive into the theory modules. We talk about how rescue systems work, rigging techniques, equipment selection and the legal responsibilities everyone has when working at height. These aren’t abstract lessons; everything we teach directly reflects what our trainees encounter on site every day.
As someone who has spent years in this field, I always remind my group how vital it is to understand, not just memorise. Knowing why something matters, whether it’s a piece of kit or a method, builds a deeper confidence that you’ll carry with you long after the course is finished.
Break / Lunch: Community and Camaraderie
Over lunch, we talk about everything from favourite tools to past on-site experiences. What strikes me most about Leading Edge courses is how quickly strangers become a team. There’s laughter, shared stories, and a real sense of mutual respect. That’s what makes our courses more than just training; they’re community builders.
Practical Rescue Drills
After lunch, the real hands-on part begins. Our team sets up a variety of rescue scenarios from simple lowering drills to more complex raises. Participants take turns rigging systems, simulating rescues and practising under pressure. It’s challenging, it’s active, and it’s exactly where the theory meets reality.
This is when you see confidence grow before your eyes. Watching someone go from hesitant to competent, from unsure to excited, is one of the reasons this job never gets old. Every trainee here is becoming someone who could very well save a life someday, and that’s powerful.
Closing Moments: Reflection and Certification
As the day winds down, we gather for a final debrief. We talk through the key learning points, address any remaining questions and celebrate the progress each participant has made. Then certificates! Each trainee walks away with an industry-recognised Leading Edge Safety license card valid for three years. This certificate represents your badge of knowledge, competence, and professionalism.
